So How's THIS for a Different Take upon Covid-19/the Coronavirus: or, You Might Well Consider Me 'Mad as a Hatter', But Prithee Tell Me PRECISELY WHEREIN My Own Pet Theory Falls Down; But If It Doesn't, Then What?
Now I'll be the very first to admit that what I'm about to state/share...maybe is not a conspiracy (theory) as such...and for all I know may not even be original or even all that surprising a 'surmise' to have/hold/make upon/about the biggest saga to face Planet Earth since the very invention of sliced bread itself...
...and please pardon me if in wording things that way I seem to make light of the whole shebang, keeping to my normal style of writing is doubtless little more (nor less) than trying to stay sane in a time of great and unwonted global fear and panic...from which even we lil' 'ole kiwis here in the Antipodes are not immune...
That all having been said/'put upon the table' as it were...
...what I'm about to share MAYBE NOT A CONSPIRACY (THEORY) - AS SUCH...but how about THIS for a theorem...come to/arrived at 'all on my lonesome' (as I reflected upon 'things Covid' this afternoon)...
What are the chances that the most significant (health) threat to life and limb - and to the global economic order - since arguably the Spanish Flu around the end of and post-WW1 - just so happened to originate...
in a place (yes, we all well know that I'm referring to Wuhan (Province) in 'the People's Republic of China') that just so happened to have a virology lab(oratory)...?
Diddly Squat, I'd grant you...if you want - or were polite enough to request - my own personal take on proceedings...
But a Chinese Government Conspiracy as such?
Maybe - and then, maybe not...
-but how about this for a novel suggestion:
It came about through a *scientific experiment which went horribly wrong...
Face-saving ever being at a premium in Asian parts of the world, not to mention (let alone understate) the rather horrific (potential) consequences of however inadvertently releasing such a pathogenic 'thingie' into Wuhan, China, not to mention the global arena itself - including for the particular scientist concerned! - I'd simply wager that no-one was prepared to 'fess up to' that fact...
...when things eventually came to light and push came to shove...
Incidentally, I vaguely recall - months ago, perhaps back in January even when things in Wuhan itself were really just starting to get underway/into high gear - some doctor involved disappearing off the scene...el permanente like...
And again, I'm not too sure, but am I correct in recalling that he was in fact the very doctor who had alerted the Chinese authorities to the outbreak in the first place, or who had correctly diagnosed what the virus was and/or whence it had originated...?
Ah, so many - **as yet - unanswered questions
*Unable at present to identify any other such in my lifetime that I know about, I'd simply have to cite the ever brilliant story of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein...though growing up on Marvel Comics with their plethora of scientific experiments that went awry with a whole lot of unintended consequences seems to have placed me in reasonable stead to make such conjectures anyhow...
**Though my nextdoor neighbour, upon my putting this theory to him today, suggested - and quite reasonably I'd have to concede - that "we may never know" (i.e. whence the virus actually originated)...-yes, the 'street wisdom' of the average bloke is usually pretty close to the truth of so many things, ain't it...
Just another high-falutin' conspiracy theory? Perhaps....but there's plenty of scope there as well...the 'truth is [indeed ofttimes] stranger than fiction', to be sure...
But, much more probable - and eminently feasible - is the far greater likelihood of good 'ole perennial human failing...
....whereby/wherein 'things' simply got away upon those folks ('men in white coats' traipsing over the mountainsides, as poet Philip Larkin once so aptly described such) in their scientific laboratories...
...and 'stuff' simply went (rather horribly) awry...
...and here's where we've all - at length - ended up...
Stranger things have happened (throughout recorded history)...all manner of wholly unintended consequences, 'effects' resulting from various and sundry 'causes'...as, for example, WW1 itself resulting, evidently, from a simple misunderstanding which flared up into one big family argument (among the (then) nations of Europe, who were all 'related' through the royal families of the respective nations)...
Postscript (Saturday Evening [Anzac Day] April 25th):
Evidently I'm not the only one to subscribe to such a view, to my - appreciative - surprise, only two days after posting this RNZ National's Afternoon Show host Jesse Mulligan conversed with an American - ........... .......... - professedly 'progressive' by political bent, "[yet] on this matter not disagreeing [wildly] from President Trump", who not only seconded such a perspective, but gave it some well-rounded depth and nuance...
...suggesting essentially that in his view there was in fact an accident (or the like) in one of Wuhan's (evidently) two such virology labs, and that this had subsequently been covered up...
And this very morning, upon BBC World News (or a citation of such upon RNZ National and/or Newstalk ZB), that most anti-Trump and anti-xenophobia, politically correct as, conventional and orthodox establishment, the European Commission (I believe), itself claimed to be quite disturbed (or words to this effect) about the conspiracy of silence (my term and paraphrase) emanating from the Chinese authorities about increasing calls for an independent investigation into the origin of the Covid-19/coronavirus 'outbreak'...
Post-postscript (Friday May 1st):
The Sabbath (God's Own Special Day) now beckons...
...but simply to record the 'amazing fact' that even today (as per this very morning's BBC World Radio) this very matter was not only referred to, but in terms that suggest that such claims as mine (as mentioned in detail above) are now being taken somewhat more seriously by the various 'authorities that be', even be that c/o the much-detested Trump Administration's own investigations thereabouts...
...as the 'Award-Winning' Democracy Now Radio broadcast out of "the heart of the coronavirus, New York City", a little later witnessed to as well - if admittedly in somewhat less flattering terms altogether...
...said 'authorities' having evidently now tested - and accordingly ruled out - the idea of a (deliberate) 'man-made or genetically-modified' [means of creating said coronavirus], yet very interestingly then stating that the same (authorities) were now checking whether it could have come about as a result of a mistake in a medical laboratory etcetera...
...which for superficial and not even all that careful readers of this selfsame blogpost of mine must certainly be ringing some alarm bells by now...
...but no, Yours Truly neither is nor has ever laid claim to the mantle of either prophet or the son of one...
