Events now well and truly having moved on by now, let me nevertheless post what I scribbled in my notebook on Friday the 16th following the previous afternoon's post-Budget day addresses - by Bridges et al...
Mr Bridges Shows his Quality At Last
Resiling from ye standard politically partisan post-Budget 'No Confidence' motion in the Government (of the day) as has been delivered by any and every Opposition leader 'from time and immemorial', National's leader (for the time being, anyhow) Simon Bridges delivered an extremely balanced and temperate response to the financial largesse to be bestowed as per the Finance Minister's Third Budget...
No fiery theatrics and histrionics for sure, much less a burning, vitriolic denunciation of all things Labour-ish, so, no, the speech won't be noted in the annals and vaults of parliamentary elocution, charisma and eloquence...
...rather one that proved fitly sober and serious to meet the gravity of the moment, the exigencies of the times...
So in no way the sort of petty ideological rant so apparently beloved of so many of his predecessors on either aisle of the House..whether main or minor party player...and for that - state of due aplomb, even 'panache', all credit to the man; he indeed rose to the occasion - as the world faces unprecedented times which naturally call for unprecedented bipartisanship and 'all of us coming together' in a spirit of fellowship as (I believe it to be, but for the life of me tonight I can't locate the LP, whether by hook or crook) Ray Stevens (or Ray Columbus?) sung so memorably in his timeless classic theme-song of the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, 'Join Together'...
But sadly lacking a true leader's mark/'signature', nevertheless, insofar as the actual tenor (if not specific substance) of his (much-anticipated) address was seemingly largely due to the gathering pressure upon him to do just such - heard by the likes of Yours Truly on various occasions, whether Bridges was being interviewed (pre-Budget) with the likes of Newstalk ZB host Mike Hosking or the selfsame radio station's weekday 'Gardening Show's' Jamie M(a)cKay...
That is, the background clamour of erstwhile National Party supporters and/or fellow-travellers and ideologues for Simon Bridges to deliver a suitably contrite, restrained and non-partisan speech...
...generally supportive of the Government's initial efforts and great success in stemming the (otherwise expected) rising tide of covid-19 upon New Zealand shores...
For a true leader already knows and has clear in his or her own mind and moreover tenaciously, unswervingly pursues the lonely path of truth come hell or high water...whatever everyone else might happen to think...
And, just as with Winston Churchill, is - eventually, ultimately - vindicated/proven right/correct as circumstances at length coalesce in such a way as to corroborate the correctness of his or her approach...usually beyond a shadow of a doubt...
...at which point, as the timeless hymn by James Russell Lowell declares so incisively, the multitude make virtue of the faith they had [heretofore] denied...
